New Delhi – India’s total exports to the U.S. market tumbled 37.5% during the period from May to September this year, knocking the dollar volume down from $8.8 billion in May to $5.5 billion in September.
In the textile and garments sector, shipments dropped 37%, from $944 million to $597 million, according to data from think tank GTRI (Global Trade Research Initiative), which was reported by several news organizations.
Within that sector, home textiles took the smallest hit during the 7-month period, falling just 16%. By comparison, garment exports to the U.S. were down 44% and yarn & fabrics exports dropped 41%.
President Trump’s initial round of added tariffs were announced in April but he then held the extra tariff on India to 10% as the two countries worked toward a new trade deal. That changed on Aug. 1, when Trump jacked up the extra tariff to 25%. Less than a week later, Trump doubled the bonus tariff on India to 50% – where it still stands.
“”The impact here was both deep and widespread,” the Business Standard quoted GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava as saying about the results.
Exports of solar panels to the U.S. dropped 60.8% from May to September, with aluminum exports down 37%, copper 25%, and pharmaceutical product exports down 15.7%.
